New Line Cinema, a division of Time Warner Inc. said Tuesday that it has signed on Peter Jackson, director of the award-winning “Lord Of The Rings” film series, to direct two films based on “The Hobbit,” a prequel to the “Rings” trilogy. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, partially owned by Sony Corp. will co-produce the films. The agreement comes after a dispute between Jackson and New Line over the director’s cut of the profits from “Rings,” which grossed a collective $2.9 billion and won 17 Academy Awards.

Apparently Eric Gill was a bit depraved:
Fiona MacCarthy wrote a biography of the sculptor and typographer Eric Gill in 1989 that dropped a small bomb on the art world.
Gill was one of the most respected artists of the 20th Century. His statue Prospero and Ariel adorns the BBC’s Broadcasting House and the Creation of Adam is in the lobby of the Palais des Nations, now the European HQ of the United Nations in Geneva.
But MacCarthy’s book revealed that he regularly had sex with two of his daughters, his sisters and even the family dog.
Thankfully, I’ve never liked Gill Sans and can now embolden my aesthetic dissatisfaction with moral indignation.

Review of Led Zeppelin’s first full concert in almost thirty years:
Some rock bands accelerate their tempos when they play their old songs decades after the fact. Playing fast is a kind of armor: a refutation of the plain fact of aging, all that unregainable enthusiasm and lost muscle mass, and a hard block against an old band’s lessened cultural importance.
But Led Zeppelin slowed its down a little.

Evgenia Peretz for Vanity Fair:
Gore responded to episodes like these by distancing himself from the beat reporters, which puzzled them. “Some of these reporters would write ruthlessly unfair pieces about him and then come complain to me in private, ‘Gore could’ve been friendlier to me at that cocktail party,’” recalls Gore speechwriter Eli Attie.
The media in this country do have a penchant for behaving like middle-schoolers.
